Change variable type

Overview

The variable type can only be changed if there is no data entered and the variable is not used in a data set.

Required Role(s)

  • Project Management

Steps

  1. Open the Variable Update window (click here for steps)
  2. On the Attributes tab, select the drop down arrow for the Variable Type field
  3. Select the variable type
  4. Select Continue
  5. Select Save or Save and Return to save the changes 


If the variable type cannot be changed: 

  1. Data for the variable has been entered
    1. If the project is in production, the variable type cannot be changed as the values entered are tied to the variable in the audit trail
    2. If the project is in test mode, the test data can be bulk deleted to clear the audit trail and change the variable type
  2. The variable is used in a data set:  remove the variable from the noted data sets
