The default for variables that are set up as ‘required’ is to display an asterisk ( * ) next to the variable. That asterisk can be hidden. If an asterisk is hidden, the variable is still ‘required' and not entering a value will show the variable group as incomplete. Changing the attribute for variables set up as ‘not required’ will have no effect; the required indicator will never display for a ‘not required’ variable. The setting for the entire variable group can also be changed (click here for steps).

  1. Open the Variable Update window (click here for steps)

  2. Select the Layout tab

  3. Uncheck the box for Display Required Indicator to hide the asterisk

  4. Check the box for Display Required Indicator to show the asterisk (default when variable is set up)

    1. Variables set up as ‘not required’ will never display an asterisk

    2. If the attribute is turned off at the variable group level that will override the variable level attribute setting (click here for steps to hide/show the asterisk at the variable group level)

  5. Click Continue

  6. Optional: click Preview to view the layout

  7. Click Save or Save and Return
